Sail Aboard the Europa!  One Berth on the November 30 - December 21, 2010 Antarctic Expedition

This 22-day expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula begins and ends in Ushuaia in Argentina - the most southern city in South America. From there, the famous “Drake Passage” has to be crossed. On the way albatrosses and storm birds will accompany the ship to the Antarctic paradise.

After passing the Antarctic convergention zone, the ship sails between the icebergs to the South Shetland Islands. The animal life is overwhelming. Sea lions, seals, gulls, cormorants and petrels use the summer in Antarctica to raise their young.

In the Antarctic waters, the bark EUROPA will anchor in sheltered bays every day. The crew will bring groups ashore in the dinghies to see glaciers, mosses and lichens, seals, birds and penguin colonies. Visitors on shore will often be welcomed by thousands of different kinds of penguins. A professional guide will give information about the flora and fauna. He will explain for example where to find bird and sea elephant colonies and he will give advice about what to do to not disturb the unspoiled scenery.

As the ship sails further south, whales, the most loyal visitor of the Southern Ocean will visit the EUROPA. The ice masses will get biggercloser to the mainland. Steep glaciers, walls of ice with magical shapes and surreal colours will surround the EUROPA with floating growlers where the leopard seals live on.

The daily program will be diverse. Every day gives new impressions.

Newport Vineyards & Winery Complimentary Tour and Tasting for Four

Newport Vineyards was originally planted in 1977 on a hill overlooking Rhode Island Sound with the goal of producing fine wines and as a way of preserving beautiful agricultural land from rapid development. Aquidneck Island is blessed with one of the most desirable farming areas in the country, if not the world. This extraordinary micro-climate is created by a combination of the warm waters of the Gulf Stream to the south and the moderating effects of Narragansett Bay. These conditions provide a long, cool growing season ideal for developing complex flavors in wine.  Since the original vineyard plantings in the 1970s, Newport Vineyards, under the ownership of John and Paul Nunes, has grown to 60 vineyard acres.

The American Sail Training Association is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization focused on youth education, leadership development and the preservation of the maritime heritage of North America. Since 1973, ASTA has supported Education Under Sail and Youth Character Development. It has been commended by U.S. Congress as the official Sail Training Organization for the United States, and represents over 200 member vessel operations in the U.S. and worldwide. It organizes the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Series, manages scholarship programs to make sail training experiences more affordable for young people, grant programs to assist crew of ASTA member vessels with the costs of professional development courses and licensing requirements, hosts an annual Conference on Sail Training and Tall Ships and an annual Safety at Sea Forum, and publishes SAIL TALL SHIPS! A Directory of Sail Training and Adventure at Sea. Our tall ships sail for a variety of reasons, but they have several mission elements in common: they preserve the arts and skills of traditional seafaring as a living and vital craft; they share the challenge and adventures of life at sea with trainees young and old; and they sail as powerful icons of sustainable and “green” human enterprise. In the process, they inspire the general public through their romance, their representation of our common maritime history, and their public goodwill mission.
