SSV Oliver Hazard Perry is the first full-rigged ocean-going ship to be built in the United States in over 100 years.  OHPRI provides innovative and empowering education programs at sea and ashore to promote personal growth and professional development while raising awareness of opportunities in the maritime industry, marine trades, and defense sector for the communities of Rhode Island and Southern New England.

Her traditional rig reaches 130ft high with a total of 19 spars, seven miles of rope and wire, and 20 sails that total 14,000 square feet. This contrasts her modern below deck features, including an environmental science lab, state-of-the art classroom technology, wheelchair accessibility, and climate-controlled living and learning spaces.

The Mate of a watch works with the Chief Mate, Executive Officer, and Captain to manage the safe operations of the vessel and programs. A Mate oversees a watch and assists in the operation of the ship and training of crew and trainees.

Applicants for SECOND MATE must have significant traditional sail experience in square rig, hold at least a 500-ton near coastal license, endorsed for auxiliary sail vessels. Applicants must have experience as a deck watch officer, traditional rigging, management of crew, and vessel operations. Professional development and license assistance available to select candidates.

Applicants for THIRD MATE must hold at least 200 ton near coastal mate or master license and be a U.S. citizen. Applicants should have experience as a deck watch officer, traditional rigging, management of crew, and vessel operations.  There may be opportunities for a motivated individual to get command experience on an affiliated vessel and STCW training classes.

All crew will be required to follow Covid-19 health and safety guidelines as set by OHPRI, Rhode Island Department of Health, CDC, and USCG. Obtaining Immunization for Covid-19 is highly encouraged.

Pay is competitive and above industry standard.  Berthing on the ship and meals are provided.
