Sail Nauticus, a department of the Nauticus Foundation, 501c3, is seeking qualified applications for the position of mate aboard the Schooner Virginia.

Virginia is a 120-foot replica of a 1917 pilot schooner launched in 2004. During the 2022 sailing season, Virginia is scheduled to travel south for haul out in Savannah, GA before returning home to Norfolk, VA. She mostly operations in the southern Chesapeake Bay conducting educational sails and programming from her homeport next to the Nauticus museum. Norfolk is a thriving mid-sized city with award wining museums, restaurants, and breweries.

This position is not liveaboard; however, as the sailing schedule dictates, overnight, liveaboard travel is required. The city has many affordable housing options within a few miles of the ship’s berth and is a great place to call home!

The mate will assist the captain in all aspects of the vessel’s operation ranging from teaching the crew (volunteer and paid), maintenance of the vessel, and leadership with educational programs. Applicants should enjoy working with student and adult participants in addition to watch standing responsibility.

USCG 100-ton inland master’s license is preferred. Clean drug test results are required. Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination by date of hire or submit to weekly COVID-19 testing.

 

Volunteer management: Virginia has an active volunteer corps of deckhand/educators. You will be responsible for project management of volunteers as well as overseeing volunteer training.

Vessel maintenance: Assist captain as necessary with short-term and long-term project planning, basic ship’s maintenance (including engineering and rigging projects).

Operations: Applicants should have experience as a deck watch officer, experience with traditional rigging, experience on vessels of this size.

Salary ranges from $42,500-$47,500 and is commensurate with experience. The Nauticus Foundation offers competitive benefits including health, dental, retirement, and paid leave.
