St. Georges School based in Middletown, Rhode Island, operates the Sailing School Vessel Geronimo and invites applications for Chief Mate for the Summer of 2021 and beyond.
The trip is from early June to early July. We would consider applicants who are only interested in sailing on the approx. 4-week voyage and those who want to stay throughout the summer
The Geronimo program is a high school semester-at-sea program where students sail as crew members on a 70′ modern sailing vessel. On board, students develop navigation, seamanship and leadership skills, and also engage in a long-term population study of sea turtles when in The Bahamas.
This summer, we are sailing from Florida to The Bahamas, then on to Bermuda and Rhode Island.
Lead a student crew of 8 high school students and participate fully in on-board and ashore activities.
Serve as a watch officer.
Manage the maintenance of the vessel.
Assist with teaching Marine Science and other watch-based skills.
Manage the completion of student’s schoolwork during the school year.
– Experience working with high school students in an experiential education setting.
– Ability to serve as a watch officer.
– For Summer: USCG Ocean Mate License preferred.
– For Fall: USCG Near Coastal Mate license required.
– STCW required for international voyages.
– Knowledge and skills to perform maintenance on board.Required certifications:
License: Mate, 100t, Oceans
STCW: Basic Training
Base pay starts at $3600/month for Chief Mate and increases based on licenses and experience. Assistance with courses related to a USCG-license possible for returning crew.
