The Sailing School Vessel OLIVER HAZARD PERRY is accepting applications for a Chief Steward during the 2020 sailing season. The ideal applicants must have experience cooking aboard sea going vessels with crew size from 12 to 15. Cadet programs to 49 total persons, providing three nutritionally-balanced meals, snacks and overnight sailing self tending meals. Chief Steward and assistants (provided during programs) maintain cleanliness of galley and mess deck. Experience ordering ship’s stores and cleaning supplies, shopping through national service companies, and managing galley assistants as needed all within budget. The cook will be assigned an assistant as needed during high volume cooking periods. OHP has a modern stainless steel galley and associated equipment. Chief Steward reports to vessel’s Master and Director of Marine Operations.

The right candidate will be considered for a full time position providing and developing winter program cooking classes aboard the ship, training future yacht/ships cooks in association with a nationally recognized university. Winter schedule may also provide light catering with on board programming needs.

Sailing out of our home berth at Newport RI’s Fort Adams State Park. Voyaging along the New England seaboard from New York City to the Coast of Maine. Daysailing and overnight programming offering maritime workforce development and STEAM based programming for local youth, adults, military and veteran populations.

Preferred 2 years of shipboard cooking experience with crew sizes of 12-40 crew or cadets. Shore-side cooking experience in moderate volume “camp” settings or similar programs will be considered. Baking and light catering experience preferred. Candidates with experience training or teaching shipboard cooking strongly preferred.

License: None, Near Coastal

Compensation is commensurate with experience and includes USCG coursework and professional training for maritime and marine credentials.
