Sightsailing of Newport,  (www.sightsailing.com ) is now accepting applications for deckhands for Aquidneck, our 80’  gaff-rigged schooner, which offers day sails and private charters in Newport from May – October. Crew share in all maintenance, cleaning and sailing tasks. These are not liveaboard  positions, however numerous housing options exist on Aquidneck Island.   

 

Aquidneck runs 1. 75 sailing  tours and private charters of Narragansett Bay, Newport RI running 4-5 sails per day. For more information, please visit the Employment section at sightsailing.com.

Deckhands  should be friendly, welcoming and have good public speaking and presentation skills. Basic sailing skills required.  Experience sailing large or traditionally rigged vessel is a plus.  Crew are responsible for all deck operations, including setting, striking, and trimming sails, handling dock lines, etc. Deckhands present interesting information about several of the important sites on Narragansett Bay to the entire group of passengers, as well as mingle and interact with smaller groups throughout the duration of the sail. Basic drinks are served during some of the sails. Deckhands are also responsible for daily set-up, cleaning, break-downs, etc.

Crew must be reliable and able to commit to sail our entire season with no large blocks of time off required. Crew need the strength and stamina to sail all day long, all day strong.  Prior experience in hospitality, bartending, theater etc. a plus. Must pass pre-employment drug test and be enrolled in our industry required random drug testing program. Mates should hold a minimum of a 50 ton license with Aux Sail endorsement.

Our crew positions offer a terrific learning experience in a fun environment. Many of our crew who demonstrate interest and potential are groomed and trained and become captains. Sailing AND hospitality experience are important, as well as public speaking ability.

Day rate plus tips. Earnings with day rate plus tips averages  $25/hour sometimes higher in peak season.
