Inland Seas Education Association is looking for someone with good leadership skills and a positive attitude to fill the position of Mate for the 2021 season aboard the schooner Inland Seas.  For a detailed job description, visit

The schooner Inland Seas provides one-half to seven-day science programs in the Great Lakes and is used for collecting research data while teaching Great Lakes topics to students of all ages. Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire Great Lakes curiosity, stewardship, and passion. To find out more, visit


Responsibilities include leading and assisting in vessel operations such as maintenance, sail handling and safety operations. The Mate must also assist the Captain in training others in vessel operations, seamanship and safety procedures. The Mate will be required to participate in teaching students and volunteers during certain programs.

Applicants must have interest in Great Lakes ecology, enjoy teaching and be capable of interacting positively with people of all ages. Applicants must hold a sail endorsed Master or Mates license with a minimum rating of 50 GRT upon Great Lakes, Near Coastal or Oceans and agree to be enrolled in a DOT random drug testing program.  All Inland Seas staff are subject to a criminal history check.  Minimum educational requirement is a high school diploma.  Experience aboard traditionally rigged, commercial sailing vessels and the ability to work aloft are required.
