Winter Maintenance Deckhand
Seasonal, starting September 2021

Category: Deck: Unlicensed

Under the direction of the maintenance coordinator, a winter deckhand will participate in a variety of maintenance tasks needed to keep a historic wooden vessel sailing.  Such tasks may include: sanding, painting, varnishing, cleaning, organizing, moving wood, shoveling snow, breaking ice, and various small carpentry projects. The right applicant may also get a chance to work closely with the professional shipwrights rebuilding parts of the Sloop. The winter crew should be ready to work long hours outside in the cold.  Living space at a crew apartment and a limited food budget are included.  There is no cook hired for the winter, so the maintenance coordinator and crew decide together whether to have shared or individual meals with the allotted funds.

This maintenance period is scheduled to begin in mid September and continue until the work is completed in mid May. Anyone with at least two months of availability in that time is welcome to apply.

Applicants must have a willingness to work in the cold.  Experience with paint, varnish, woodworking, and power tools are highly preferred.

This position includes room and board.
