TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Race Series has been postponed to 2021 and we miss the tall ships races! Join us for the Tall Ships® Throwdown, a friendly virtual competition brought to you in partnership with our friends at Galveston Historical Foundation.

Participating Ships:  Pride of Baltimore II, EAGLE, American Pride, Exy Johnson, Matthew Turner, Alert, Irving Johnson, Spirit of Bermuda, Oliver Hazard Perry, Elissa

When: Week of October 5 culminating in weekend “races” on Saturday October 10 to Sunday October 11.

What: The Throwdown includes five days of daily lectures from each of the competing organizations posted live on the Galveston Historical Foundation’s facebook live page and website and promoted nationally on Tall Ships America’s website and through social media. Lectures share the history of the vessel and organization, introduce crew members and staff, and answer any questions from the public.

And then on Saturday, the races begin and fundraising opens.

Ships are competing in three areas:

  1. Timed Sail Set Race: Each vessel is allotted a certain number of crew (determined by their size and class) and must set and douse 3 sails depending on the heat. The timed recording will be judged by an expert panel and posted throughout the day. Best time wins – with points awarded for style!
  2. Creative: The ships that don’t have sails bent on or enough crew are getting creative. This will be something to watch!
  3. Crowd Favorite: Ships that collect the most donations over the week will be determined the crowd favorite (and will raise necessary funds to support operations).
